Voluntary evacuation order issued for portion of East Ascension

Residents of St. Amant, Acy, Sorrento could be flooded by Amite River’s Diversion Canal overflow.

Residents in a low-lying area of Ascension Parish bordering the Amite River’s Diversion canal have been asked to leave because of potential flooding as waters from Hurricane Isaac flows down the river.

The voluntary evacuation order applies to the communities of St. Aman, Acy and Sorrento.

The area in danger of flooding lies south of LA 934 (Gold Place Road), east of LA 431 and LA 941 (Brittany Tower Road), north of I-10 to the I-10/US 61 crossover, continuing north to LA 934.

A Red Cross shelter has been set up at Lamar-Dixon Expo Center’s Trade Mart building at 9039 St. Landry Road in Gonzales.
